2.9 What Kate Did

Sun and Jin are back together, emerging from their tent in the morning happy and content. In he distance, Kate watches Sayid digging a grave for Shannon.

Jack is treating Sawyer’s shoulder. Sawyer asks for Kate, and, in a feverish state, says that he loves her.

Kate is in the jungle, high up in a tree, gathering fruit and almost falling out. On the ground again, she sees a beautiful black stallion in the jungle; it runs off.

In flashback, Kate is waiting at a house when a drunk man returns home. Kate helps him into bed. He makes a couple of drunk disgusting passes at her. She frees herself and rides off on her motorcycle. Soon after, the house completely explodes in flames.

At a diner, Kate asks the waitress for a beer. The waitress asks for ID. "I’m 24, mom," replies Kate. Her mom gives her coffee instead. Kate gives her mom and insurance policy for the house, and leaves.

Jack goes to Shannon’s funeral on the beach, leaving the slightly shakey Kate in charge of Sawyer.

Eko tells Ana that he is going to Shannon’s funeral, but she says she doesn’t think she will go. Eko tells her that he thinks most people know Shannon’s death was an accident.

At Shannon’s funeral, Sayid makes a beautiful, tear-laden statement before walking away. The mourners file in to drop soil into her grave.

Kate is mashing fruit for Sawyer. When he begins mumbling, she bends down near him and he suddenly grabs her roughly, asking why she killed him.

Jack and Locke return to the bunker with the alarm going and 23 seconds left before the countdown ends. Locke just gets the code entered in time. Jack finds Sawyer unconscious, laying beside the bed, with no sign of Kate.

In the jungle, Charlie catches up to the fast-walking Kate. Kate continues on her own, looking for that horse.

In flashback, Kate buys a bus ticket when she is captured by the marshall.

At the beach, Jack asks Charlie where Kate is. Charlie says she is headed back to the caves. Jack heads off in pursuit.

At the bunker, Locke frees Jin from his handcuff. Michael discovers blast doors that will lower in the event of an explosion. For a possible explanation, Locke suggests they watch the Dharma movie, and Eko says he wants to see it too.

Jack tracks down Kate and asks what she is doing. When she doesn’t respond, Jack holds her until she calm down. Suddenly, they kiss. When they stop, she runs off.

At the conclusion of the movie, Michael and Locke discuss what the movie means. When Locke asks Eko for his opinion, he silently rises and leaves.

Kate sits at Shannon’s grave. Sayid arrives and places beads on Shannon’s cross.

In flashback, the marshall is driving Kate back to the arraignment on a rainy night. He asks why Kate killed her step-dad, then puts forward his reasons why. When the car hits a tree, Kate uses the opportunity to knock the marshall out and steal the car. As she is about to drive away, she sees a black stallion.

Michael takes a look at the computer setup.

Eko is waiting at the dinner table. Weaving his tale from a bible story, he presents Locke with a hollowed out bible that Ana’s group found in the bunker on the other side of the island. The hollow contains the missing frames from the Dharma film.

Hurley wonders if the fact that Jack is chopping wood (a job normally done by Sawyer) means that Jack hates Sawyer, but Jack denies it.

In flashback, Kate enters an army recruiting center where her Dad is at a desk. She asks her dad why he didn’t tell her that he was not her dad – and that Wayne – the man who she killed – was her real father.

Kate talks to Sawyer, whom she believe is ‘haunted’ by the ghost of Wayne. She tells him she kills him because she hated that he was a part of her – that she would never be any good. Sawyer regains partial consciousness at this point, and Kate is relieved.

Locke helps Eko splice together the full film, while Locke wonders what the odds were that the film would ever be rejoined.

Kate supports Sawyer for a walk outside, to prove to him that they have not been rescued. They both see the horse this time.

Jack brings Ana a couple of bottles of tequila.

The missing segment of film is a stern warning that the computer must not be used for communication with the outside world, or another ‘incident’ may occur.

While Michael is fiddling with the computer cables, he notices typing on the screen:

"Hello?"
Michael types: "Hello?"
Someone types: "Who is this?"
Michael types: "This is Michael"
Someone types: "Dad?"

Comments

I don’t think Ana has her gun anymore. At least I don’t see it sticking out of her pants. But we never saw her surrender it to Jack or anyone else.

Why would someone remove the segment of film that forbids people from using the computer to communicate with the outside world?

Is that really Walt, or is it a trap being set by someone?

Nits

Kate says she can take care of herself, and we know she is a skilled tracker. So how did a huge horse get within a couple of feet of her without her hearing or sensing anything?

Memorable Moments

  • The Walt cliffhanger ending

Quotable Quotes

Shanon and I were strangers. We never would have met if…we wouldn’t even have spoken if…but we did meet, and we did speak. At least…I loved her."
- Sayid

Kate: Do you believe in ghosts, Sayid?
Sayid: I saw Walt in the jungle just before Shannon was shot. Does that make me crazy?

"Don’t mistake coincidence for fate."
- Eko to Locke

2.8 Collision

In flashback, Ana is shooting target practice with a handgun at a firing range. Next, she is at her psychologist, talking about her boyrfriend breakup. The psychologist says she is ready to return to work – work as a police officer for the city of Los Angeles.

Sayid attacks Ana, and Echo steps in. When Sayid is winning that fight, Ana cold-cocks him, then points the gun at everyone else. Ana insists on staying in control, even though she shot an innocent woman.

In flashback, Ana is assigned to a desk job by her captain/mother, despite her request to get back on patrol. When she requests a transfer, her mother gives in and lets her back on control.

Jack shares fruit with Rose and finds a golf ball in his wash basin. It came from Kate. She’s down the beach with Charlie and Hurley, taking a few swings. Jack comes down to give her tips, and Kate challenges him to a three hole tournament.

Ana now fears what the others will do when they find out she killed Shannon. She wants to stay put, but Echo hoists Sawyer over his shoulders and heads for camp.

In flashback, Ana is back on patrol in a car with a partner. They respond to a domestic disturbance, and Ana pulls a weapon way too early; her partner tells her to holster her weapon, and she complies.

Michael brings Sayid water, even though Ana is brandishing a gun.

When Jack hits an errant shot, he ends up at a creek and is surprised by Echo and Sawyer. Jack, Kate, and Echo bring Sawyer to the bunker for a cold shower to get his fever down.

Ana says that if Michael brings ammo, medical supplies, and a pack, she will let Sayid go (and, presumably, head off alone).

In flashback, Ana’s partner continues to complain about her attitude. They are interrupted by another cop saying that they got the man that tried to kill Ana with hollow point bullets made to penetrate a police vest. Ana says it isn’t the guy, and her mother doesn’t understand why she is denying it.

Echo tells Locke that a girl was shot and killed. Locke knows it was Shannon.

Sawyer has gone septic. Jack is treating Sawyer, but Kate has better luck by holding him and whispering to him.

Bernard and Libby decide to leave Ana, and Ana kicks Jin out, too, leaving just she and Sayid. Michael is rushing back to camp and meets Sun. He tells her Jin is okay, and they rush off to find Jack.

Jack is trying to get info from Echo, but he saying nothing. Michael and Sun arrive, and Jack loads up two scope rifles. Echo tries to stop him; when he says, "Ana-Lucia made a mistake," Jack remembers her from their bar conversation at the airport. Echo says he take Jack there alone with no guns, and Jack agrees.

Ana tries to make small talk with Sayid while walking the knife’s edge of indecision: should she / will she kill him?

In flashback, Ana is having a drink at the bar where the man who shot her is hanging out. She has purposely let him go so she can stalk him and shoot him down, telling him she was pregnant at the time of her shooting.

Ana frees Sayid and invites him to kill her, but he refuses. He walks to Shannon’s body and embraces her.

Kate is at Sawyer’s bedside as he twists in a feverish pain. She keeps telling him he will be alright.

Michael returns to the beach and is glad to see Vincent again.

Jin, Libby and Bernard emerge from the jungle. Charlie and others hug Jin, and Bernard and Rose embrace. Jin and Sun run to each other and embrace warmly.

Echo leads Jack to Sayid, who is carrying Shannon out of the jungle, and Ana, who meets Jack’s gaze for awhile before lowering her eyes.

Comments

Now even Jack knows that Kate loves Sawyer.

It will be interesting to see if Ana stays, and if she can blend in with the group and stop killing people. Since Kate is seemingly pairing off with Sawyer, Ana and Jack could get something going – but is she too crazy?

What happened to Cindy? Should we assume that she was taken by the Others?

Memorable Moments

  • Jack, Kate, and Echo meet

Quotable Quotes

"Where is the doctor?"
- Echo’s first line to Jack

"Nice job. I never learned the whole ‘whispering in the ear’ thing in med school."
- Jack to Kate

Sayid: Are you going to kill me? That’s what you’re thinking about, isn’t it?
Ana: Should I?
Sayid: Almost 40 days ago on this very island, I tied a man to a tree and I tortured him. I tortured him as I tortured many men. Men whose voices I still hear in the night. Should you kill me? Maybe you should. Maybe you were meant to.

"What good would it be to kill you, if we’re both already dead?"
- Sayid to Ana

2.7 The Other 48 Days

This is the story of the survivors of the tail section (Ana and crew).

An idyllic, emerald green island beach is puntured by bits of flaming metal and the tail section of a jet. Ana emerges from the water, gasping for air and surrounded by the panicked cries of survivors. Ana and Echo make it to the beach and help to pull out others. Ana saves a young girl by performing CPR.

Echo leaves the boy and girl with Cindy and goes into the water to retrieve bodies of those who drowned. Libby sets a man’s leg. Ana and Goodwin find Bernard, still in his seat and suspended in a tree. Ana talks him through the crisis. Goodwin, a Peace Corp worker, makes a fire by rubbing sticks together. Bernard asks Echo if he pulled any African-American bodies out of the water.

While sleeping the first night, there is a sound of a struggle. Ana and Goodwin find Echo, holding a bloody rock over two bloody bodies. He has killed two of the Others.

In the morning, an investigation finds that the dead Others have no shoes, no wallets, no tags on their clothes. Three people are missing. Ana says they should move off the beach and find a safer place, but Nathan argues that the signal fire should be kept burning. Ana says the black box will be enough to save them. But stewardess Cindy knows that the plane had been flying for two hours in the wrong direction, and, without a fire, no one will be able to find them. They stay on the beach, gathering food, and watching Donald, the man with the injured leg, get sick and die.

On day 5, Donald dies and is buried.

Day 12, and the gang is still on the beach. Nathan, who has a little of that ‘Ethan’ look and buil abut him, is acting a little strange, going off on his own when he is supposed to be going in pairs.

In the night, the Others return, taking the children and more. Ana kills an Other woman and finds a list of the nine survivors they took. Ana is highly suspicious of Nathan, who was missing for two hours the day before. But in the middle of grilling him, Goodwin diffuses the situation. They agree that they need to move off the beach.

Day 15: The group has been walking for three days straight. Nathan makes the decision to stop at a creek that has fruit trees, a rock wall.

Ana is digging a deep hole. Libby comes by to say that Nathan creeps her out.

Ana kicks Nathan and dumps him in the hole. Cindy also says she never saw him on the plane. Ana keeps visiting Nathan in the pit, asking him where the kids are.

Day 23. Somebody has been throwing food down to Nathan. Ana suspects Bernard, but it was Echo. Alone by the creek, Goodwin tells Ana that the group is worried about here – she has had Nathan in the pit for four days. Goodwin asks her to let Nathan go, but she says the worst is yet to come, promising to torture Nathan tomorrow.

In the night, Goodwin lowers a rope into the pit and frees Nathan, then promptly breaks his neck!

Day 25: Cindy wakes everyone with the news that Nathan is gone. Ana tells everyone they must move camp.

Day 26: Back on the beach, and now Ana is getting funny vibes about Goodwin.

Day 27: The group find a doorway in a hillside. The inside of the door is stamped, ‘Quarantine’. Inside, the wall is inscribed with the Dharma logo. There is power, lights, a bible, and a radio. Bernard tries the radio but gets only static. Goodwin says they need to use in on higher ground and tries to head off with the radio by himself, but Ana insists on accompanying him. As they climb, she asks his opinion on why they are being attacked. Goodwin says they took the strongest man that first knife, and Ana asks why they didn’t take him. They stop to take a break. Ana’s interrogation leads Goodwin to admit he is one of the Others. Ana returns to the group and says only that they are safe now.

Day 41: Bernard picks up Boone’s radio transmission from the plane, but Ana turns the radio off, believing it is the Others trying to track them down. Bernard wants to believe that there are other survivors – he has a vested interest in that – but Ana says there are none. Alone by the creek, Ana breaks down and cries. Echo finds her and finally speaks again. Ana breaks down and cries in his arms.

Day 45: Cindy and Libby find Jin floating up onto the beach. He is tied up and interrogated, with Ana of course thinking he is a threat.

We see a recap of the events that occurred when Jin, Michael, and Sawyer encountered Ana’s gang.

On Day 48, while searching for the missing Sydney, the whispering Others cause Ana to shoot at movement through the trees – it is Shannon whom she shoots.

Comments

Ethan, like Nathan, also said he was from Canada.

The writers did a great job of casting Nathan and making it seem as if he must be the villian. Consequently, I assumed that Nathan was going to kill the Peace Corp member Goodwin. It surprised me when the opposite happened.

A good writing job is done to paint Ana as a decidedly ‘gray’ character: neither all good nor all bad. This is a strongpoint of the series – virtually every character has good and bad points.

I like the way this information was revealed. First, a few episodes ago, we see Ana’s gang acting like savages towards Jin, Michael, and Sawyer – but we don’t know why. Now we see it from Ana’s perspective. It doesn’t excuse it but it explains it.

It took some creative structuring to actually use the same cliffhanger ending (the shooting of Shannon) in back-to-back episodes.

Memorable Moments

  • Goodwin breaking Nathan’s neck

  • The tense scene as Goodwin cuts an apple with a knife and shares it with Ana

  • The moving scene at the creek when Echo talks and Ana cries

Quotable Quotes

Bernard: It’s my wife – I can’t find her.
Echo: I will pray for her.
Bernard: Where the hell are the rescue planes?
Echo: I will pray for them too.

Libby: You really think it’s possible that one of us is one of them?
Ana: Why do you think I’m digging this hole?

Ana: How come nobody saw you on the plane, Nathan?
Nathan: I was in the lavatory.
Ana: For two hours?
Nathan: I don’t remember seeing you on the plane, Ana-Lucia.
Ana: That’s because you weren’t on it.

Ana: Where are they? Your friends – Nathan? What did you -
Goodwin: If you had cut off his finger, and he still told you he was on the plane, I think maybe you would have started to believe you had the wrong guy.
Ana: Did you kill him?
Goodwin: Nathan was not a good person. That’s why he wasn’t on the list.
Ana: What about the kids? Did you kill them too?
Goodwin: Children are fine. They’re better off now.

Ana: What are you lookin’ at?
Echo: It’s going to be okay.
Ana: What, are you talkin’ now?
Echo: It’s been 40 days.
Ana: You been waiting 40 days to talk?
Echo: You waited 40 days to cry.

Ana: He has a broken handcuff on his wrist!
Echo: I’m not sure that is a threat.

2.6 Abandoned

Sayid leads Shannon to an elaborate shelter he has built for her on the beach, including lit candles and a palm frond door. They move toward each other and kiss passionately, until Shannon discovers his big gun, which he says he only carries because he has someone to protect.

The travelers have stopped to rest, although some want to keep moving to avoid the Others. Sawyer is in the middle of saying that all Michael cares about is himself and his kid, when Michael, Jin, and Echo show up. Echo says he saw ‘them’, and they have to go.

Sayid leaves to get some water, and Walt appears in the doorway, dripping wet and speaking Exorcist-like jibberish. Sayid doesn’t believe that Shannon really saw Walt, believing it was a dream. Frustrated, Shannon leaves. Claire wakes the baby at the disturbance, which upsets Charlie a little.

In flashback, Shannon is teaching ballet to young girls when her mom calls to say her dad was in an accident. At the hospital with her mom, she finds out that he died in a car accident.

Sawyer is getting weak and the group is still a day away from camp, but Libby, a clinical psychologist, tries to convince Sawyer that he’s going to be fine.

Hurley and Rose are hanging clothes on the beach because Rose prefers sunshine and wind to the dryer in the hatch. They are interrupted by Shannon, who asks the location of the personal items that Michael and Walt didn’t take on the raft. She lets Vincent sniff one of Walt’s shirts, and he heads off in tracking mode, with her holding the leash. But Vincent leads her to Boone’s grave.

Claire’s baby has been awake and crying for eight hours straight. Locke wraps the baby up and that calms him down. Claire complains gently that everyone seems to know more about her baby than she does. As Claire talks about how she and Charlie are playing mom and dad, even though they barely know each other, she mentions that Charlie carries a virgin mother statue that he found in the jungle, which perks up Locke’s ears, as he knows what is inside that statue.

In flashback, Shannon attends her father’s funeral. Boone shows up after having been away, and they embrace. Back in her room, they share a scotch together, and Shannon talks about how her stepmom’s resentment of her relationship with her father has poisoned their relationship.

Ana’s groups stops to rest on a rocky outcrop, while waves crash along the beach. Echo says they must head inland to avoid a peninsula that may not be passable.

Claire lets Locke hold the baby, until Charlie shows up and takes over.

Sayid joins Shannon at Boone’s grave, but Shannon leaves again to keep looking for Walt.

In flashback, Shannon opens a letter about her application for a job at the Martha Graham dance company, and finds out that, against all odds, she got it. Her celebration is tempered by her landlord calling to say that her rent check bounced. She meets with her stepmother and finds out from her stepmother that she is getting no money from her father’s will. She asks her stepmother for money but is turned down cold.

Charlie and Locke are playing backgammon and talking about Claire and Aaron. Charlie talks about Claire’s need to gain more responsibility, and Locke skirts around the subject of Charlie’s heroin addiction, without confronting him about the statue.

Sawyer is getting sicker and sicker, and passes out. Ana wants to roll out, but Michael insists on making a stretcher for Sawyer. He gets help from Bernard and Echo.

Sayid follows Shannon on her tracking adventure, despite her protests. He tells her that she will not find Walt, but she is sure he is, and she tells him about the message bottle.

Jin and Michael carry the stretchered Sawyer, but the whole group has to help to get him up a steep cliff. After reaching the top, Ana realizes that Cindy is missing. She wants to go back for her, but Echo will not let her because he doesn’t want to split up the group. Ana blames Echo for Cindy’s disappearance. When she finishes scolding him, the group all hear the whispers of the Others. Ana gives the panic order to "Run!"

In flashback, Shannon packs her things. Boone arrives. His plan to ask his mother for money and then give it to Shanon has failed. Shannon’s plan to crash at Boone’s place in New York also fails; he is leaving New York to work for his mom. Boone offers Shannon money and promises to use his trust fund to keep her afloat, but she says she wants to fend for herself. Angry now, she tells Boone to leave.

Shannon falls down in the rainy jungle, pleading with Sayid to believe her.  She fears being treated as a joke, thought of as worthless, and being abandoned. Sayid promises to never leave her. As they embrace, they hear the whispers of the Others, and this time, they both see Walt. Walt is making the ‘shhh’ gesture, but Shannon yells and runs in pursuit. Sayid falls when he follows; a shot rings out, and Shannon has been shot in the chest by Ana. Sayid slowly rises in anger, staring at Ana…

Comments

When Echo says he saw the Others, someone asks, "Did you see the kids?", inferring that the Others have captured more children than just Walt.

Nits

Just before Claire says, "He just won’t sleep," to Locke in a closeup, there is a wide shot with an unidentified survivor walking in the background. In the next wide shot, the walker is gone, but he wouldn’t have had enough time to get out of frame.

Memorable Moments

  • Michael and Anna’s confrontation in the jungle, and Ana’s description of the Others

  • Sawyer and Michael’s moving scene together just before Sawyer passes out

  • The cliffhanger ending (Is Shannon dead? Is Sawyer going to die? Is Sayid going to kill Ana?)

Quotable Quotes

Ana: You’re doin’ this to get the cowboy back faster, aren’t you? You would risk our lives to help him?
Echo: It’s the only way I know.
Ana: I liked you better when you weren’t talking.

Michael: What happened to you people? You want us to take you back with us? Fine. But you want me to keep quiet? Then you need to tell me why I have to.
Ana: They came the first night that we got here. They took three of us. Nothing happened for two weeks. Then they came back and took nine more. They’re smart, and they’re animals, and they could be anywhere at anytime. Now we’re moving through the jungle – their jungle – just so you could save your little hick friend over here. And if you think one gun and one bullet is gonna stop them – think again. So shut your mouth and keep moving.
Michael: They took my son.
Ana: They took a lot of things.

Sawyer: I would have left you behind.
Michael: Shut up, man, don’t try to -
Sawyer: I did leave you behind.
Michael: Yeah, well, good thing I ain’t you.

Sayid: Walt is not out here! You’re following a Labrador, not a bloodhound, in an effort to find a boy who’s on a raft in the middle of the ocean -
Shannon: He’s not on the raft.
Sayid: What are you talking about?
Shannon: We found the bottle on the beach.
Sayid: The bottle with the messages that they brought with them?
Shannon: I know he’s out here somewhere. I saw Walt. And the raft is gone, and he is all alone.

"I will never leave you. I love you. And I believe you."
- Sayid to Shannon

2.5 …And Found

Sun and Claire are washing out clothes on the beach, discussing whether the raft made it, when Sun suddenly realizes she has lost her wedding ring.

In flashback, despite her resistance, Sun’s mother is hooking Sun up with a man by using a matchmaker, because her father says the time is right.

Across town, Jin is dressing up for a job interview, while his friend consults the charts and tells him love is in the air and it is ‘orange’. Jin says he cannot take care of a woman, as he can barely take care of himself.

The others have decided that they will gather food and water and head back to ‘where they came from.’ Ana splits them into pairs (except for Jin, who goes fishing with Ana and Bernard).

Sun is still searching frenetically and tells Jack that she lost her ring. Jack offers to help look but Sun refuses.

Ana tries to get Jin to help them fish, but Jin does his own thing and prompty nets three big ones.

In flashback, Jin gets the job, but not before he is demeaned for being from a small fishing town.

Libby apologizes to Michael for throwing them in the pit, citing ‘trust issues.’

Mr Echo gives a present to Sawyer: a hand-made machete for his protection. Libby interrupts to say that Michael has run off into the jungle. Jin makes the case that it must be related to Walt. Ana wants the group to leave; Jin tries to convince Sawyer to come with him to find Michael, but Sawyer is only concerned with himself. Jin is temporarily stopped by Mr Echo. There is a brief fight and standoff – then, surprisingly, Mr Echo leaves with Jin.

Hurley helps Sun to search for the ring, with his theory that Vincent ate it – which makes the search area somewhat distasteful.

In flashback, Sun and her mother meet the family and the man she is being hooked up with at the hotel where Jin works as the doorman. Jin’s big bow assures that they do not meet or see each other. Despite the setup, the two are enjoying each other’s company.

In search of Michael, Jin sidesteps a boar and finds a body impaled by a spear, killed by the real Others.

Sun tears apart her garden in frustration and is discovered by Locke.

In flashback, Sun waits for her date, Mr. Lee. He arrives and graciously borrows a lapel flower from Jin. But he tells Sun that he is going to marry an American woman he met while at Harvard. Disapointed, Sun leaves.

Mr Echo find Michael’s tracks, telling Jin that ‘they don’t leave tracks.’ A suspicious sound causes Jin and Echo to hide while a gang of Others passes by; only their legs can be seen. One of them carries a teddy bear on a little rope. Echo says they do not have Michael.

In flashback, Jin lets a ‘common’ man and his son into the hotel lobby because the boy needs a toilet. When his boss berates him once again, Jin quits on the spot.

On the beach, Sun and Kate discuss the missing ring. Sun tells Kate that the message bottle was found – and buried.

Sawyer stops to rest and receives water, and perhaps the first signs of compassion, from Ana.

Echo separates from Jin to find Michael’s trail. Michael appears and tells Jin to go back, then takes off with Jin in pursuit. Echo and Jin join Michael in their search for Walt.

Sun finds her wedding ring near where she buried the message bottle.

In flashback, Sun and Jin meet by literally bumping into each other.

Sun and Kate sit together and watch the sun set over the ocean.

Comments

It hasn’t been adequately explained why the others are always on edge.

Jin gets a lot to do in this episode, and the writing for him is excellent. He can now use one or two learned English words to communicate important ideas and concepts.

It is unclear to me whether Echo and Jin have joined Michael in the search for Walt, ofr if they convinced him to come back with them.

Memorable Moments

  • The conflict between Jin, Sawyer, Ana, and Mr Echo

  • The look on Sun’s face when she answers Hurley’s question about good Korea / bad Korea (in fact, all the faces she makes during that conversation are priceless)

Quotable Quotes

"Fish."
- Jin’s one-word that answers a multitude of questions

The Seoul Gateway Hotel is one of the finest hotels in the country. Do not open the door for people like you."
- Hotel boss to Jin

Michael: Why don’t you head inland? That’s where all the fruit is on our side.
Libby: We don’t go that way.
Michael: Why?
Libby: ‘cause that’s where they come from.

Hurley: So, Seoul…is that in the good Korea or the bad Korea?
Sun: The good one.

Locke: I used to get angry all the time; frustrated too.
Sun: You’re not frustrated anymore?
Locke: I’m not lost anymore.
Sun: How did you do that?
Locke: Same way anything lost gets found: I stopped lookin’.

2.4 Everybody Hates Hugo

Hugo walks through the store room in a delirious daze, eating candy bars, finding and taking bites from steak dinners and ice cream sundaes, and guzzling milk from the carton, until he is interrupted by Jin, who speaks perfect English. He is awakened by Kate, just four minutes before the counter was going to expire.

Michael is getting impatient, and Sawyer’s shoulder wound is still bleeding. Their waiting is ended when Ana-Lucia and the black man insist that Jin and Michael climb out, leaving Sawyer alone.

In flashback, Hurley realizes he has won the mega lotto jackpot. When he passes out and his mother finds him on the floor, she blames his slovenly lifestyle and berates him to change his life. He doesn’t tell her about the winning ticket.

Charlie grills Hurley on the contents of the hatch, but Hurley doesn’t say much, which annoys Charlie.

Hurley visits Rose and is surprised when she shows no interest in what is in the hatch. Hurley brings her inside to help him with the job of sorting through the food. Jack is unhappy that Hurley told someone.

Claire’s walk on the beach is interrupted when she finds the messages in the bottle that were being carried by the guys on the raft.

Hurley and Rose are charged with making an inventory of all the items in the storeroom. Rose talks about her husband Bernard, and has to correct Hurley when he speaks of Bernard in the past tense, since she says she knows he is still alive. Hurley worries that everyone will hate him, but Rose assures him that he is the one that everyone loves. Kate interrupts to ask for and take a bottle of shampoo, despite the weak protestations of caretaker Hurley.

In flashback, Hurley has not quit his low-level job at a fast-food chicken joint, although he is fingering the winning ticket and thinking about it. When his boss berates him for eating chicken on the job and giving out too many napkins to customers, Hurley quits. Inspired by Hurley, his friend quits too.

Locke stops to eat some fruit and asks his hidden shadow to come out. Charlie emerges from the jungle. He has been following Locke to find out the secrets that are hidden from him.

Deep inside the hatch, Sayid has discovered an electromagnetic field and, possibly, a way around it by going under it.

The others have allowed Michael, Jin, and Sawyer to join the group, and they now belive that they were also on the plane. Ana-Lucia hits Sawyer quite a few times in and effort to make it clear to him that she is in charge and he is supposed to obey her rules.

Locke tells Charlie pretty much everything about the hatch – the counter, the man who fled, and the food, and who is in charge of the food – Hurley. Immediately, Charlie confronts Hurley with this knowledge and asks for peanut butter and gets miffed when Hurley doesn’t give in.

In flashback, Hurley and his friend are in a record store, giving bad reviews to Driveshaft, and flirting with a Starla, a cute girl at the headphone counter.

Sayid and Jack have climbed underneath the structure and find a geothermal generator. Sayid says that the concrete that was poured over everything reminds him of Chernobyl. They are interrupted by a hissing sound which Jack traces to Kate in the shower.

The raft boys are led to the underground shelter where the other survivors have been living. One of them (Libby) had told Michael that there were 23 survivors. There are only a handful remaining now, however.

Claire, Shannon, baby and dog visit Sun in her garden and give her the bad news about finding the message bottle from the raft.

Hurley breates Locke for telling Charlie all about the hatch. Hurley wants to quit, but Locke says he cannot. Hurley leaves the hatch and is next seen carefully lifting two sticks of dynamite from a hidey hole in within a tree.

In flashback, Hurley and his friend are stealing garden gnomes and loading them in a van. They take them to their former boss’s house and lay them out in a ‘Cluck You’ pattern. Hurley asks his friend to promise that no matter what happens, they’ll never change. They stop at a convenience store where a film crew is interviewing the clerk who sold the winning lottery ticket. He recognizes Hurley…and the cameras start flashing.

Rose discovers Hurley laying the stick of dynamite inside the storeroom. Rose wants an explanation. Hurley says the windfall of food will mess everything up, in the same way as his windfall of money messed up the relationships he had prior to winning it.

Hurley comes up with an alternate plan for the food – to give it out to people as gifts, all at once, like Santa Claus.

Off to the side, Jin buries the message bottle deep under the sand, preserving the illusion that the messages – and the sailors – are still on their journey.

Just to mess with our prejudiced minds, the white ‘other’ guy who meets the sailors at the shelter asks about Rose. He is Bernard (not the black guy). Note that Rose never said her husband was black.

Back on the beach, Rose pockets the candy bar she got from Hurley, saving it for another, better time in the future.

Comments

Perhaps the Others are being led by an aggressive, evil leader, but for the most part they are, or at least were, decent people.

I just realized that Charlie is acting a little more like a guy who is taking drugs again.

Quotable Quotes

"Everything’s going to change. Have a cluckity cluck cluck day, Hugo."
Jin, speaking in Hugo’s dream

Ana-Lucia: You do what I tell you. When I say, "move" you move. When I say "stop" you stop. When I say "jump", what do you say?
Sawyer: You first.

2.3 Orientation

The largest of the ‘Others’ singlehandedly bashes Sawyer, Michael, and Jin, and they are carried off into the jungle and dumped into a pit trap. They ignore Michael’s questions about ‘his boy’.

In flashback, Locke bursts out in anger at a therapy session when the stories of others don’t match up to his story of the kidney that was stolen by his father. After the session ends, the coordinator flirts a little with Locke.

Jack will not lower his gun until Desmond tells him where Kate is. Kate has dropped out of the vents into a room loaded with guns. She creeps up on Desmond and knocks him down, but an errant shot hits the computer console. Jack holds Desmond down while Desmond pleads with him to let him fix the console and enter the code before the countdown reaches zero and they all die. Jack lets him up and Desmond tries to fix the computer.

In flashback, Locke gets up to leave Helen after making love. He returns to his father’s house, where his father comes outside to talk to him. Locke asks him ‘why’, and his father says there is no ‘why’ – he just got conned.

Kate goes to get Sayid to fix the computer. Desmond tells his story: he was sailing around the world when his boat crashed on the reef. Someone named ‘Kelvin’ took him down into the hatch and told him when they enter the code, they are saving the world. Kelvin died, and now Desmond is alone. Jack doesn’t believe the story; of course, Locke does. Desmond tells them to watch a film that was stored in the bookcase.

Hurley is just mentioning to Sayid that things are returning to normal, when Kate emerges from the jungle, breathless and sweaty, and says that she needs Sayid’s help.

Sawyer and Michael question Jin about Walt and the Others. Jin was blindfolded and has little information. Sawyer tries to get out, but is almost stabbed by the big black Other, who then dumps an injured, unconscious girl into the pit.

Jack and Locke discuss what’s going on and what went on, with much distrust, and then watch the film. The film is choppy but the gist is that what started as a innocent science project was disrupted by an ‘incident’, and now the code must be entered when prompted.

In flashback, Locke is having dinner with the therapist. She got him a six month anniversary present – a key to her house. But she also says that she followed him and saw him at his father’s house. Locke is upset, but understands why Helen did what she did. She asks him never to go to that house again, and Locke agrees.

Jack has no interest in watching the film again.

The girl wakes up, scared. She was also on the flight – it was the woman who was flirting with Jack. She (Ana-Lucia) was in the back of the plane and landed in water. She has been finding for herself since the crash.

Desmond’s attempt to fix the computer shorts the power in the station. He grabs some food and flees in terror. Jack also leaves, but for a different reason – he does not believe. Locke stays, scared and alone.

In flashback, Locke watches Helen sleep, but he cannot. He returns to his father’s old house. Helen shows up, throws his keys over the gate, and tells him he must choose between her and his father. Pushed into a corner, Locke goes with Helen.

Sayid, Kate and Hurley show up. Sayid sends Hurley and Kate to find the breaker, and Hurley gets distracted by the food storeroom.

Ana-Lucia deftly takes Sawyer’s gun and is lifted out by ‘Shaft’. She is a member of the Others.

Jack tracks and catches Desmond and trains a gun on him. Desmond gives him the code, but Jack doesn’t care. Jack is going a bit mad when faced with the illogic of the situation. He confides to Desmond that he married the woman he saved, but is not married to her anymore.

Kate finds the breaker, Sayid fixes the computer, and despite Hurley’s warnings, Locke enters the number. The last digit is wrong, but Jack shows up just in time to correct it. With 2 minutes and 14 seconds to go, Jack and Locke argue about who will press the button. Locke refuses, saying it is a two person job. He needs Jack to press it. Jack, for his part, will not press it, as this would be an admission that he believes in it. With a couple of seconds to go, Jack presses the button.

Comments

When Desmond says goodbye to Jack at the stadium, he says, "See you in another life." This lends some creedence to my theory that the island inhanbitants are in the afterlife.

Ana-Lucia looks very good – the antithesis of ‘disheveled’ - considering she has been on her own for 40 days. Of course, the guys should have been more suspicious of her, as she is one of the Others.

The Others merely seem to be a separate group of plane survivors, and each group is highly suspicious of each other.

Now the survivors must worship and believe in the power of the counter. Do they dare risk not entering the code? Who wants to be responsible for the destruction of the world?

Quotable Quotes

"We’re gonna need to watch that again."
- Locke to Jack, after watching the film

Sawyer: We’re about to be the best thing that ever happened to you.
Ana-Lucia: How’s that?
Sawyer: The next time Shaft opens the cage, [pulls gun] gonna get a surprising little Howdy Doody.

Jack: You really think this is happening?
Desmond: Why wouldn’t it be?
Jack: It says ‘Quarantine’ on the inside of the hatch – to keep you down here- to keep you scared. We’ve been up there for over 40 days and no one’s gotten sick! You think this is the only part of it that’s true? Did you ever think that maybe they put you down here to push a button every hundred minutes just to see if you would! That all of this - the computer, the button – is just a mind game – an experiment!
Desmond: Every single day.
